New page

__NOTOC__
<div class="ev-article-kicker">LIFE BETWEEN THE BIG EVENTS</div>
The Evansphere gives ordinary routines room on the page. Before a system becomes a crisis, someone has already lived with its sounds, cooked with its heat or learned the route past it.
A home that runs in stages
The opening of The Divide introduces the Evans household through warmth in the floor, a changing air return and a pump moving water into a day tank. Porridge, a kettle and schoolwork occupy the same room as these background processes. Infrastructure is part of home, even when nobody is talking about it.
Food as work and companionship
Caitlyn’s opening rounds move through misting lines, grafting benches and familiar growing rows. A basil leaf can belong to a working morning and to the soup planned for that evening. The extension’s large responsibility exists beside these small acts of care.

Family plots offer another scale of food production: work that contributes to a cooperative and a household table. The extension is a community as well as a facility.
Learning who keeps things running
A classroom assignment asks children to draw the systems that keep their homes alive. Naming air, water, heat, food and power is only part of the task. Naming the people adds a different kind of understanding.

At work, learning continues through colleagues. Hana’s irrigation question and Anika’s insistence on inspection introduce expertise as something practised, shared and checked.
Objects with working histories
In Port Alpha, a retired pressure door becomes a communal table with its inspection stamps still visible. Such details connect usefulness with belonging. The object has changed jobs without losing the traces of its earlier one.
Knowing a place through sound and touch
Machinery provides a familiar background to Martian life. A changed vibration or a missing sound can attract the attention of someone who knows a place well. On Earth, wind, surf and biological growth introduce a different sensory environment.

These contrasts belong to how characters experience their surroundings. They are part of the world’s atmosphere, not a code that the reader needs to solve.
Leaving work in another person’s care
John’s departure includes a handover. The process recognises that systems continue after one person leaves, and that understanding needs to travel with responsibility. Shared meals and practical preparations give the departure a community around it.

These introductions draw on the opening chapters of 39 Minutes, The Divide and The Two-Body Problem. Discussion questions explores the ideas they raise without describing later events.
