Renticuluous Alpha

PLACE · THE DIVIDE

Renticuluous Alpha is a Martian habitat connected to the Valles heat network.

Setting

Its circulation is constrained by the Bottleneck. Warmth reaching a central point does not necessarily reach the rooms at the far end of the network. Chief Lorn represents its concerns.

In the book

The opening chapters establish the Valles network; Chapter 5 introduces the habitat representatives.

Reading the network from its far end

Renticuluous Alpha helps distinguish a system total from a local experience. Energy available elsewhere in the network is not the same thing as warmth delivered to a particular room.

Its representative’s concerns sit beside those of Olympus Prime and Volallies Beta. Reading the three habitat entries together introduces the competing demands around Paul’s work without describing his response to them.
