Caitlyn Evans
Caitlyn Evans is John Evans’ mother and a Botanist Prime on Mars. John meets her at the agricultural lock before his departure for Earth.
Work and evidence
[edit]In Ring Four, the plants tell a different story from the controller’s clean report. Caitlyn asks John to investigate their timing and pressure behaviour. Her attention to living systems places observation ahead of administrative certainty.
Family
[edit]Caitlyn’s care for John is practical and direct. Their shared work, departure meal, and private conversation show the trust — and difficult responsibilities — within the family.
In the book
[edit]Introduced in Chapter One, “The Shape of an Mday”; central to Chapter Two, “The Work That Holds,” and Chapter Three, “The Last Ordinary Day.”

In The Divide
[edit]In The Divide, Caitlyn’s botanical work places her among the people managing the habitat’s growing systems. At home, she is Paul’s wife and John and Jennifer’s mother. Her perspective connects practical care, willingness to be corrected and the daily costs of Paul’s work.
In The Two-Body Problem
[edit]Caitlyn takes the central role as Botanist Prime of the Olympus Prime agricultural extension. An unfamiliar blight puts her expertise and authority under pressure. Her work with Rian Okoro, Hana and Lia sits alongside her marriage to Paul Evans and her life as John and Jennifer’s mother. Her book asks what it means to protect without controlling.
A life beyond the job title
[edit]Caitlyn’s work joins close observation with patient routine. Plants require attention before they become an emergency, and colleagues need room to develop their own judgment. In the opening of her novel, an irrigation question and a grafting bench make those responsibilities tangible.
The three books give her different places in the foreground. Reading them together adds context to her family relationships without reducing her to someone else’s mother or wife.
