__NOTOC__ <div class="ev-article-kicker">THE LANGUAGE OF THE SETTING</div> These short definitions explain how the published books use their working vocabulary. They introduce concepts rather than clues or solutions. == Mday == The Martian day used in local routines. It lasts roughly thirty nine minutes longer than an Earth day, affecting shifts, meals and communication schedules. Mars and Port Alpha introduce its place in ordinary life. == Earth standard time == The time reference used alongside local Martian scheduling for communication and travel between worlds. The distinction matters whenever people or equipment need to agree on when something happens. == Closed loop == A system that recovers and reuses resources rather than treating each use as the end of the supply. In the books, water, air and food production make resource accounting part of daily life on Mars. A loop still needs maintenance and outside inputs. == Pressure boundary == A separation between spaces whose conditions must be controlled. Doors, seals and checks make these boundaries familiar parts of a Martian resident’s route through a habitat. == Reclamation == The work of restoring usable infrastructure and supporting communities on Earth. The Alliance’s Reclamation Initiative brings together engineering, health and other forms of practical expertise. == Heat reserve == Energy available to the heat system. It does not by itself describe how much heat can reach a particular household. The Divide systems distinguishes reserve from delivery. == Distribution and bottleneck == Distribution is the movement of a resource to where it is needed. A bottleneck constrains that movement. Renticuluous Alpha introduces the importance of circulation in Paul’s setting. == Drawdown == In The Divide, the agricultural extension’s demand on the shared heat network. Growing food and warming homes depend on connected infrastructure. == Botanist Prime == Caitlyn’s professional role at the Olympus Prime agricultural extension. It combines cultivation expertise with responsibility for the wider growing operation. == Grafting == Joining plant material so that it can grow together. In Caitlyn’s opening routines, grafting also provides a language for patience, attention and the limits of intervention. == Quarantine == Controlling movement across a boundary to manage a possible biological threat. In Caitlyn’s story, boundaries affect workers and households as well as crops. See The Two-Body Problem systems. == Telemetry == Measurements reported from equipment or a system. The books distinguish a reported value from direct observation and ask how records can be checked. == Handover == Passing work and responsibility to another person. John’s departure preparations emphasise understanding what is being maintained, not simply transferring a file. == Operating limit == A defined condition within which work is intended to remain safe. Knowing a limit also means knowing when to stop, check and seek another person’s judgment. Reader guide · Everyday life · Themes
