Maintenance as local knowledge

A service gallery is part of someone’s daily rounds even when other residents rarely notice it. Ellis brings that working familiarity to the childhood setting of The Divide. His role helps make the habitat a place maintained by a community rather than a machine with one indispensable operator.

For Jennifer, the adults around the family include people whose expertise comes from repeated practical attention. Their presence broadens the world beyond the kitchen and classroom.
